In 1953, the Ainsworth Lifeguard Association purchased this Ford Station Wagon. It was the first ambulance on Presque Isle State Park. It served as the primary ambulance for over 10 years.
The state took over the title in 1964, when it became the backup ambulance until the late 1970's. Eventually, the state transferred the title to the Erie Firefighter's Museum in 1982. The museum held on to the ambulance until the Presque Isle Lifeguard Association began raising funds to restore it in 2022.
In 2026, after extensive work by George Lyons' GT Motorcar, Old Unit 6 was finally road-worthy again! The Firefighter's museum graciously transferred the title to PILA, and we plan to use it to raise awareness about water safety and the history of lifeguards on Presque Isle. More work is still needed, and the Presque Isle Lifeguard Association is dedicated to the preservation of this piece of lifeguard history.
We are so very grateful to our supporters and everyone who made this restoration possible.
